Room Furnishings and Measurements

All rooms contain a bed, an extra-long (80 inches) bed mattress, dresser, wardrobe, desk and chair for each resident. You’ll supply your own linens, laundry bag, mattress cover, wastebasket, study lamp and clothes hangers. The University does not have storage facilities for trunks and suitcases, but many students find they make great coffee tables and clothing storage in their rooms. All student rooms have tile flooring and the windows are covered by Venetian blinds. Average room carpet measurements are 10 feet by 12 feet. Lincoln Hall carpet measurements vary; call the Residence Life Office if you are assigned there. Standard windows measure 63 inches long by 94 inches wide; Lincoln window measurements are 63 inches long by 36 inches wide. To avoid duplication, you’re encouraged to consult with your roommate before purchasing items to decorate your room, such as carpeting and drapes or deciding on what kinds of electronic equipment and appliances to bring, such as a TV, radio, fan, stereo or compact refrigerator.

We recommend you purchase extra-long twin sheets to fit our 80-inch long mattresses. Bring a pillow, sheets, mattress pads, blankets and towels, as no linen service is offered. You’ll also find a shower caddy or plastic basket helpful for carrying your toiletries to and from your bathroom.

For your convenience, we have partnered with Residence Hall Linens to provide parents and students with an affordable way to ensure you have sheets that will fit the extra-long mattresses in our residence halls. The Residence Hall Linens program has all your campus living needs, from extra long twin sheets and comforters to matching towels and storage items.

Room Decorations

While we encourage you to creatively design your residence hall space, you must check with Residence Life Office staff before modifying your room in any way. NOTE: Paneling and any wall or floor coverings (such as cork, bamboo or tapestry) that will damage walls or floors or create a fire hazard are not permitted. You also are not permitted to remove or replace furniture from your room.

Information about Rider’s refrigerator rental program is included in your room assignment letter. If you do not reserve one in advance by mail, there will be an opportunity for you to do so at the start of each term. Location and times will be posted in the residence halls during opening weekend. Only one refrigerator per room is allowed and it can be no larger than four cubic feet.

Extension Cords

All extension cords used in the residence halls must be UL-approved power strips with a minimum 14 AWG wire and a minimum of 15 amps with a built-in circuit breaker and gang receptacle. Multi-plugs with UL approval and a minimum of 15 amps with a resettable fuse may also be used.

Cooking Appliances

No cooking is allowed in student rooms using microwave ovens, toaster ovens, hot plates, electric fry pans or heating coils. The only cooking-related appliances you are permitted to use are hot pots and coffee pots. Please note that this policy is strictly enforced for student safety.

The only pets permitted are fish that can be kept in a maximum 10-gallon aquarium. No other pets are allowed.
