How to pursue the NJ Alternate Route teaching certificate

Follow these steps toward earning your certificate.

Obtain a CE for the subject/grade level you wish to teach

Candidates must have obtained a Certificate of Eligibility (CE) through the NJ Office of Licensure and Academic Credentials (OLC). View the New Jersey Department of Education Certification Application Checklist.

Areas of certification

All areas of study lead to a teacher certification in the state of New Jersey. Area of study or specialty is based on the NJ teaching certification intended.

Alternate route candidates may pursue certification in approved New Jersey subject areas, including:

  • Elementary K-6

  • English as a Second Language (ESL)
