There’s no better way to learn about a graduate program than by hearing from a student themselves. Our ambassadors can answer your questions about Rider, the application process, admission process and program curriculum. They can also share their own personal experiences about life as a graduate student at Rider.
Meet our ambassador
Vanessa Carter, class of 2024
How did you know you wanted to study in your chosen field?
I have been an elementary school teacher for over 15 years and I see the need for social emotional learning and counseling services increasing. After the pandemic, so many young students are coming in with emotional issues that are preventing them from learning. I started incorporating more social emotional learning with my first grade class and I also run the Positive Behavior Support in Schools program for my building. I really enjoyed that aspect of my work and I wanted to focus more on that so I decided to go back to school for counseling.
What is the most influential piece of advice you’re received or the most impactful experience you’ve had during your time at Rider?
I think all of the self reflection that we do in class has helped me become more self aware. I also really enjoy all the group work and partner work that we do in our classes and practicing the skills we are taught.
What excites you about your field of study?
I am excited about being able to help young people regulate their emotions and become better versions of themselves. I am also excited about all the different opportunities that come from counseling and the various paths this degree can take you.
How do you feel you’ve grown in your field of study since coming to Rider?
I feel like I have a much better understanding of the importance of building a rapport with students and clients. I have learned more about myself and tools that not only help me in my professional journey but also in life.
Is there anything else you want to share with future students?:
Although it can be challenging to fit the classes & classwork into your already busy schedule, there is flexibility within the program. Having a hybrid schedule helped me fit all my classes in while working full time and having three children at home. The professors will work with you. Be sure to communicate with them.
