Praxis® Subject Assessments

All students (both Undergraduate and Graduate) must pass the Praxis® Subject Assessment test(s) in all subjects appropriate to their certification areas 6-months prior to clinical practice (full-time student teaching).

The Praxis® Subject Assessments measure knowledge of specific subjects that K–12 educators will teach, as well as general and subject-specific teaching skills and knowledge. View more information about the Praxis Subject Assessments.

Depending on what area of certification you are looking to pursue, the passing score will vary. Please visit this page and click on the various specialty licensure areas to view the test, code and qualifying score for New Jersey.

Test Retake Policy: If you feel you did not perform to your potential, you may retake a Praxis® test once every 21 days, not including your initial test date. Note: If you take a test that is comprised of subtests, such as Elementary Education: Multiple Subjects (5001), you cannot retake a subtest until after the 21-day period. This applies even if you canceled your scores on a test taken previously. If you violate this restriction, the scores from your retest will be canceled by ETS and your test fees will not be refunded.

New Jersey Student Learning Standards

The New Jersey Department of Education provides NJ Student Learning Standards documents free of charge. The documents give you detailed information about the K-12 curriculum covered in New Jersey’s schools. You can use them as review guides when you begin to study for the Core Academic Skills for Educators practice tests and Subject Assessment practice tests. Downloading and reading these guides should be your first step in preparing to take the Praxis®. Please click on the following links to view the NJ Student Learning Standards for each subject:

Study Companions

ETS has created Study Companions to assist you in preparing to take the Subject Assessment tests. The Study Companions are comprehensive overviews for each test, including detailed test descriptions, sample questions with answers and explanations, and general tips and information about the Praxis® tests.

Webinars & Videos

ETS’s free Praxis® webinars deliver in-depth information and demonstrations about Praxis® test preparation products and services. Learn how you can ensure success as you prepare for teacher licensure. Each live session provides attendees with the opportunity to interact and ask questions, so we encourage you to participate. View the schedule and more information regarding the live webinars.

Interactive Praxis® Practice Tests

Rider University’s College of Education and Human Services is committed to the success of our students. We have purchased many of the interactive practice tests directly from ETS to assist our students in preparing for the Subject Assessments tests. These tests will help to prepare students in a timed, online environment that simulates the real test. These tests will help you practice one full set of authentic test questions and after completing the test, view your results by content category along with the correct answers and explanations for each correct answer.

Please email Nikki Caplinger ([email protected]) requesting the interactive practice tests indicated by the 4-digit test code number.

Example: Please send me the Praxis interactive practice tests for test 5002, 5003, 5004, and 5005.

Note that when you take a practice test, you will answer the same questions in the same order. Retaking the same practice test more than once does not give you different practice questions, or change the order in which the questions are delivered.

  • We do not have interactive practice tests for any combined test (ETS does not offer the combined Subject Assessment practice tests).

Tutoring at the Academic Success Center

Students can schedule individual or small group tutoring appointments for all Praxis® exams. Appointments can be scheduled through TutorTrac, by calling the Academic Success Center at 609-896-5008, or by stopping by the office in Bart Luedeke Center (BLC) 237.

Additionally, students can schedule individual appointments with the success coach, Elizabeth “Liz” Sapudar, for assistance with test anxiety and test-taking strategies by emailing her at [email protected].
