New undergraduate students may be required to complete placement testing in specific subject areas. It is important that you review the placement testing information and complete all relevant tests to ensure you are registered for the appropriate courses. 

Please select the appropriate school name below to determine which placement tests are required for your major. Deadlines for completion are also listed below. 

Placement tests by college

Students admitted as test-optional are required to take the math placement test by June 27. Alternatively, if you have previously taken the SAT or ACT, please forward your scores to the Office of Admission at [email protected].  

Business students admitted with test scores NOT majoring in actuarial science: 

  • Students with a math SAT score of 570 or ACT score of 23 or higher are placed in “Quantitative Methods for Business” (MSD105). No placement test is required.
  • Students with a math SAT score of 560 or lower or ACT score of 22 or lower are required to take the online math placement test by June 27. 

Business students admitted with test scores who are majoring in actuarial science: 

  • Students with a math SAT score of 650 or higher or ACT score of 28 or higher are placed in “Calculus I” (MTH 210). No placement test is required.
  • Students with a math SAT score of 640 or lower or ACT score of 27 or lower are required to take the online math placement test by June 27. 

For students required to take the online math placement test, refer to the instructions below to access the math placement test for your major.

To access the math placement test for students NOT majoring in actuarial science, please follow the instructions below:

  1. Schedule a time when you have 60 uninterrupted minutes to complete the exam.
  2. Visit canvas.rider.edu.
  3. Login with your Rider Key username and password. 
  4. Accept the invitation to the Business Math Placement Exam.
  5. Follow the on screen instructions to complete the exam.

To access the math placement test for students majoring in actuarial science, please follow the instructions below:

  1. Schedule a time when you have 60 uninterrupted minutes to complete the exam.
  2. Visit canvas.rider.edu.
  3. Login with your Rider Key username and password. 
  4. Accept the invitation to the CLAS Math Placement Test.
  5. Follow the on screen instructions to complete the exam.

A foreign language course is not required for business students but can be used to fulfill one of the four liberal arts electives requirements. If you are interested in taking a foreign language course, the foreign language department requires an internal exam to determine proper placement.

Only education students with a second major in math or a science program are required to take the online math placement test by June 27. Refer to the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences placement testing information below for further instructions.  

All students are required to take a foreign language course. Students who are native speakers or have previously studied a foreign language offered at Rider (Spanish, French, Chinese, Italian or German)  are required to take the foreign language placement test. Students interested in starting a new language may indicate this on the form and do not take the placement test. Please complete the online foreign language placement test by June 27.

All students in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences are required to take a foreign language course. Students who are native speakers or have previously studied a foreign language offered at Rider (Spanish, French, Chinese, Italian or German) are required to take the foreign language placement test. Students interested in starting a new language may indicate this on the form and do not take the placement test. Please complete the online foreign language placement test by June 27. 

Students admitted test-optional and majoring in science or mathematics* are required to take the math placement test by June 27. Alternatively, if you have previously taken the SAT or ACT, please forward your scores to the Office of Admission at [email protected]. 

*Science and mathematics majors include actuarial science, computer science, cybersecurity, mathematics or the life or physical sciences (i.e., behavioral neuroscience, biochemistry, biology, chemistry, earth sciences, environmental sciences, environmental studies, exercise science, geology, health sciences, integrated sciences & math, marine sciences).

Students admitted with test scores are not required to take the math placement test. Placement will be determined as follows: 

  • Students with an SAT math score of 560 (ACT math score of 23) or below will be placed into “Intermediate Algebra” (MTH 100). 
  • Students with an SAT math score between 570 and 640 (ACT math score between 24 and 27) will be placed into “Algebra & Trigonometry” (MTH 105). Students majoring in actuarial science, biochemistry, chemistry, computer science, integrated science and math, and mathematics will be placed into “Pre-Calculus” (MTH 106).
  • Students with an SAT math score of 650 (ACT math score of 28) and above will be placed into “Calculus I” (MTH 210). 

Students may challenge these placements by taking the placement test.

Accessing the math placement test

If you are required to take the math placement test, please follow the instructions below: 

  1. Schedule a time when you have 60 uninterrupted minutes to complete the exam.
  2. Visit canvas.rider.edu.
  3. Login with your Rider Key username and password. 
  4. Accept the invitation to the CLAS Math Placement Test.
  5. Follow the on screen instructions to complete the exam.

All students in Westminster College of the Arts are highly encouraged to register and attend the overnight orientation session on Monday, July 18 - Tuesday, July 19. It is an excellent opportunity to get to know your fellow WCA students. Piano placement testing for Westminster Choir College (WCC) students will also take place during this event.

All WCA students are required to complete foreign language placement test by June 27, with the exception of some music education majors.  Music education majors do not need to complete foreign language testing, unless they have a secondary major in another academic subject.

Westminster Choir College

  • All WCC students must complete music theory placement testing. The initial placement will take place in person on July 18; higher levels will take place during Welcome Week by invitation.
  • All WCC students must complete piano placement testing. Piano placement testing will take place prior to orientation check-in on July 18. If you are not able to attend the July 18-19 overnight orientation session, please contact [email protected] to make other arrangements. 
  • Choral Hearings will take place during Welcome Week. More information will be announced soon.

School of Fine and Performing Arts

  • All Musical Theatre (B.F.A.), Theatre/MusicalTheatre (B.A.) and Music Production majors must complete music theory placement testing. This will take place online on a preselected date which will be announced soon. 
  • Dance placement testing will take place during Welcome Week. More information will be announced soon.

General information

Course schedules

All first-year student course schedules are created by the appropriate academic dean’s office. Students will receive their finalized schedules no later than the end of July. 

Transfer and AP credits 

If you received college credit in high school through AP exams or IB courses, or if you have taken college level courses at a community or four year college, please arrange to have your transcript sent to the Office of Admission to ensure your fall schedule accurately reflects those credits. Rider’s College Board Advanced Placement (AP) examination code is 2758.

Testing accommodations

If you need testing accommodations, the Student Accessibility and Support Services (SASS) office must receive your Confidential Self Disclosure Form and required documentation prior to taking the test. The office will review and approve your request in advance, if appropriate. Information regarding required documentation can be found on the SASS web page.
