The purpose of the Making Connections Program is to support Rider science students as they experience both personal and professional growth. Participating members, called J&J STEM Scholars, engage in a range of activities aimed at fostering academic success and real-world skill development. By building a community of driven individuals, the program aims to expand the pipeline of students pursuing degrees and careers in science fields.

Benefits

Access to a network of professionals and mentors in various science-related fields is a major pillar of the program. Making Connections hosts a monthly speaking series that brings a diverse group of scientific professionals to Rider’s campus. Scientists speak to students about how the content taught in Rider’s science courses is used in real-life, professional settings like research, medicine, athletic training, and more. They also share details about how they chose their own careers and the steps they took to get them.

In addition, at least one STEM networking night and one themed panel discussion are offered each year. At networking nights, students can expect to meet with professionals from many scientific fields to learn more about career options and gain exposure to potential internship opportunities. Panel discussions offer an in-depth look at what professionals do on a daily basis and how they work with others to create positive change.

All of these events are carefully curated to provide insights and exposure to various professional pathways requested by current students.

Establish a strong support network of fellow scholars who share similar academic and career aspirations. The Making Connections Program promotes a collaborative and encouraging environment where scholars can learn and have fun together. Weekly meetings are offered every Thursday for J&J STEM Scholars to enjoy each other’s company and develop communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills. For first-year students, mentoring from second-, third-, and fourth-year scholars is also provided.

J&J STEM Scholars are provided with numerous resources to help them do well in classes, especially the introductory science sequence. They can attend tutoring, Supplemental Instruction, Making Connections study sessions, or success coaching appointments to get direct support. Study checklists are also provided for select classes to help students learn difficult course content and develop a variety of study skills.

For scholars who meet all of the requirements listed below, the Making Connections Program provides a stipend at the end of each semester. Stipends are intended to encourage active involvement and reward the dedication of scholars in their achievement of personal and academic growth.

*Stipends are dependent on grant funding at the start of each academic year.

Requirements:

Attend Making Connections Events: Scholars must attend a minimum of two events (guest speakers, networking nights, panel discussions) each semester to stay engaged with networking opportunities.

Attend Weekly Meetings: Regularly attend at least 50% of the weekly meetings. These meetings serve as a platform for skill development, community building, and updates on program activities.

Utilize Academic Support: Scholars must make use of academic support services provided by the program for their STEM courses. A minimum of 13 hours of academic support is required each semester (an average of one hour per week).

Meet with your Peer Mentor: Your mentor will reach out to schedule your first meet up. After that, check-ins should happen at minimum every two weeks.

Submit Surveys: Feedback about your experience as a J&J STEM Scholar is essential for the continuation of the program and so that events can be tailored to your interests. All surveys will be posted on Canvas.

Complete BIO 115 Study Checklists: Students in BIO 115 need to complete study checklists designed to help them practice with course content. Study checklists can be completed independently, with a study group, or by attending a meeting with the Academic Success Center. Evidence of completion must be submitted on Canvas. These checklists line up with course material; you can expect to complete 1-2 each week.

Submit Surveys: Feedback about your experience as a J&J STEM Scholar is essential for the continuation of the program and so that events can be tailored to your interests. Surveys will be posted on Canvas and can be completed there.

Get your Resume Approved: An approved resume must be submitted to Canvas each academic year. This will enhance your applications for internships and/or research experiences that will help you land a job or admission to graduate/professional school after graduation.

Apply for an Internship or Research Experience: Numerous opportunities, both at Rider and at external organizations, will be shared throughout the year. You’re also welcome to search for opportunities of your own. J&J STEM Scholars must apply for at least ten of these experiences every academic year (keep in mind that many applications are typically required to get an offer, especially at external organizations). Involvement in research and internships is essential to gain professional experience, build real-world skills, and add to your network.
