The Rebovich Institute for New Jersey Politics at Rider University, together with the Gail Bierenbaum Leadership Council, will host “An Evening with Mikie Sherrill” on April 4 at 6:30 p.m. in the Mercer Room in Daly Dining Hall.
A former U.S. Navy pilot and federal prosecutor, Democratic Rep. Rebecca Michelle “Mikie” Sherrill was elected to New Jersey’s 11th congressional district in 2019, ending a more than 30-year Republican hold on the district.
"Congresswoman Sherrill has been in office for just four years, yet she is winning her elections by some of the biggest margins in the entire state,” says Micah Rasmussen ’92, director of the Rebovich Institute. “We are eager to hear her thoughts on how she accomplished this and on what’s in store for her future."
After receiving her bachelor’s degree from the United States Naval Academy, Sherrill went on to complete flight training as a member of the first, female aviator class to be eligible for combat. During her almost 10 years of active duty, she flew missions throughout Europe and the Middle East as a helicopter pilot. She also served as a Russian policy officer, helping to put U.S. nuclear treaty obligations into place and overseeing the relationship between the U.S. Navy and the Russian Federation Navy.
Following her time in the Armed Forces, Sherrill went on to receive her Master of Science in Global History from the London School of Economics and Political Science, and her law degree from Georgetown University. In 2012, she joined the U.S. Attorney’s Office in New Jersey as an outreach and re-entry coordinator, and in 2015, became an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the same district.
Now in her third congressional term, Sherrill continues to make strides in enhancing the state’s health care system, bolstering national security and improving the lives of working families, among other key issues.
