Baraka has been the city’s mayor since 2014
by Adam Grybowski
The Rebovich Institute for New Jersey Politics at Rider University will welcome Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka for an event on Nov. 30 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
"A Conversation with Newark Mayor Ras Baraka" will feature a substantive conversation and a Q&A about his experience leading Newark since he became the city’s 40th mayor in 2014. Baraka’s urban revitalization efforts have resulted in the completion of major infrastructure projects, reduced crime and lowered unemployment.
"Baraka's record has placed him at the very top of the list of future contenders for statewide office in New Jersey," says Micah Rasmussen, the director of the Rebovich Institute. "His style of urban leadership and ability to forge cooperation between governments to address problems make him stand out in state politics."
Baraka is coming off the completion of a massive infrastructure project that replaced the 18,720 lead service lines that deliver water to Newark’s homes and families. He touts the city’s collaborative effort between city government, residents, and partners in county, state and federal government as a potential model that could be followed nationwide. The recent infrastructure bill signed into law by President Joe Biden includes $15 billion aimed at eliminating lead from the nation’s drinking water systems.
In addition to leading the most populous city in New Jersey during the coronavirus pandemic, Baraka has pursued an agenda that includes returning to local control of schools and expanding technology services for residents. He was educated in Newark Public Schools and at Howard University, where he received a bachelor's degree in political science and history, and St. Peter’s University, where he received a master's degree in education supervision. He is also a published poet and appeared as a singer on Lauryn Hill's 1998 album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.
The Rebovich Institute for New Jersey Politics is dedicated to public service and scholarly analysis of government, public policy, campaigns and elections in New Jersey. It was founded in 2001 by the late Professor David Rebovich (1949–2007). Today, the Rebovich Institute is a dynamic and creative home where students can network, study and gain practical experience in New Jersey politics.
"A Conversation with Newark Mayor Ras Baraka" is free and open to the public, but advanced registration is requested by visiting rider.edu/baraka.
