Rider University will host the 2012 Minding Our Business (MOB) Business Plan Competition on Wednesday, July 11, from 6 to 8 p.m. in Sweigart Hall Auditorium on Rider University’s Lawrenceville campus.
The competition will feature 30 participants, ages 10 to 13, from Trenton public schools, as part of the MOB Summer Program at Rider. During the program, participants receive 14 days of training on how to plan and run a business. All students in the program are required by the end of the training to produce a plan for their business idea. On July 11, the students with the 10 best plans will compete for these top awards: $100 for first place, $75 for second place, $50 for third place, and other prizes for fourth and fifth place. Business leaders from the Trenton Metropolitan Area will judge the students’ business plans.
“These 11- and 12-year-old contestants will impress you. They are not only presenting well-formulated business plans, but they will do so in a professional manner,” said Dr. Sigfredo Hernandez, program director and co-founder, and associate professor of Marketing.
This year’s event will also recognize and celebrate Princeton Area Community Foundation for its long-term commitment and support of the MOB Summer Program.
In 2008 and 2009, the MOB Summer Program was recognized by the National Center for Summer Learning at John Hopkins University as one of the top summer programs in the country in terms of summer learning excellence. In 2009, the program became the National Winner of the Best of Best Practices Award in Entrepreneurship Education at the Small Business Institute National Conference in Florida.
