Exhibits, concerts and other events are planned to delight the University community and their families
by Adam Grybowski
Two months after parents dropped off their kids for the fall semester, Rider welcomes them back with a full slate of events during Family Weekend, Nov. 1-3, 2013.
What can they expect? Let's start with food.
The Legacy Breakfast invites alumni who have a dual connection to the University: a degree and a child or grandchild currently enrolled at Rider. The event recognizes the multiple generations whose loyalty to Rider has made attending the University a family tradition. The breakfast will be held in the Mercer Room, Daly Dining Hall on the Lawrenceville Campus, from 9 to 10:30 a.m.
Later that day, the Family Luncheon will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. This complimentary lunch for students and families typically draws about 1,500 to 2,000 people. For entertainment, participants can enjoy student a cappella performances, dancers and plenty of activities. Lawrenceville attendees should go to the Student Recreation Center and the Westminster luncheon will be held at the Dining Commons.
Several events throughout the weekend will showcase Rider's tradition of preparing students to excel in the arts.
For example, families can attend open rehearsals of Westminster's acclaimed choirs and ensembles, including the Westminster Symphonic Choir, which is recognized as one of the world's leading choral ensembles. That rehearsal will take place at the Playhouse at Westminster Choir College on the Princeton campus from 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM.
There will be several opportunities to catch Rider University Theatre's presentation of the Tony Award-winning play Metamorphoses, directed by Trent Blanton and based on the myths of Ovid’s "Metamorphoses." Performances will be held in the Yvonne Theater (Lawrenceville campus) on Friday, November 1, at 7:30 p.m., on Saturday, November 2, at 7:30 p.m., and on Sunday, November 3, at 2 p.m. For ticket information, call 609-896-7775.
Discover Greatness, an exhibit from The Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in Kansas City, is currently on display in the SRC Seminar Room (Lawrenceville campus). Participants will have the chance to view photographs that showcase the history of African-American baseball from the late 1800s-1960s. On Saturday, Nov. 2, the exhibit is open from 2 to 6 p.m. and from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 3.
By next weekend, the World Series will have wrapped, concluding the 2013 baseball season, but sports fans can keep cheering ― for the Broncs.
The men's basketball team will kick off its season in an exhibition game versus East Stroudsburg in the Alumni Gym on the Lawrenceville campus at 4 p.m. Families can also attend two volleyball games: the first (versus Quinnipiac University), is at 1 p.m. on Saturday and the second, (versus Fairfield University), occurs at 1 PM on Sunday. Both games will be held on the Lawrenceville campus.
