Craig Carpenito ’96 will discuss his vision of justice for NJ
Rider University will host alumnus and U.S. Attorney for the District of New Jersey Craig Carpenito ’96 on April 24 at 7 p.m. "An Evening with Craig Carpenito ’96" will highlight Carpenito's path to the office and his vision of justice in the state.
The event is presented by The Rebovich Institute for New Jersey Politics and is free and open to the campus community and the public.
As U.S. attorney, Carpenito is New Jersey's highest-ranking federal prosecutor. He leads a staff of more than 130 lawyers and 100 staff members and oversees all federal criminal prosecutions and civil matters involving the federal government in New Jersey.
"Carpenito's position gives him a first-hand, insightful perspective on homeland security, drug enforcement, public corruption and other topics of vital importance to not only New Jersey but the country," says Micah Rasmussen, director of the Rebovich Institute. "We're proud to welcome him back to his alma mater."
Carpenito was appointed in January 2018 by U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions to serve as U.S. attorney for New Jersey via interim appointment. Although U.S. attorneys are typically appointed by the president, New Jersey federal judges then voted Carpenito into the position after President Donald Trump did not choose a successor when his interim term was coming to an end. Carpenito was among 17 interim U.S. attorneys across the country who came into office after the acting U.S. attorneys they succeeded had served the maximum amount of time allowed in that role by law.
Carpenito was hired by Chris Christie, New Jersey’s U.S. attorney at the time, to join the office in 2003 and served until 2008. Outside of working for the Department of Justice, Carpenito’s legal career comprised policing Wall Street as an enforcement attorney for the Securities and Exchange Commission and practicing in the private sector for the firm Alston & Bird, where he rose to become its co-head of litigation and trial practice. He earned a bachelor's in political science from Rider and his law degree from Seton Hall.
The Rebovich Institute for New Jersey Politics is dedicated to public service and scholarly analysis of government, public policy, campaigns and elections in New Jersey. Founded in 2001 by the late Professor David Rebovich (1949–2007), the Institute is a dynamic and creative home where students can network, study and gain practical experience in New Jersey politics.
"An Evening with Craig Carpenito ’96" takes place in the Mercer Room, located in Daly Dining Hall on Rider University's Lawrenceville campus. For more information and to register, please visit.
