Westminster Conservatory of Westminster Choir College will present a faculty recital entitled Familiar and Exotic: French and Spanish Music for Cello on Sunday, February 13 at 7:30 p.m. in Bristol Chapel on the campus of Westminster Choir College of Rider University. Admission is free.
The performance will feature cellist Melissa Burton Anderson joined by Kate Campbell, piano; Jill Crawford, flute; Clipper Erickson, piano and Nancy C. Froysland-Hoerl, soprano.
They will perform Manuel de Falla’s Suite Populaire Espagnole, Jacques Ibert’s Ghirlarzana, Philippe Gaubert’s Trois Aquarelles, Maurice Ravel’s Chansons Madécassses, Claude Debussy’s Sonata for Cello and Piano and “Intermezzo” from the opera Goyescas by Enrique Granados.
Cellist Melissa Burton Anderson pursues a varied career as chamber musician, orchestral performer and teacher. She has performed with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, served as the principal cellist of the Rochester Oratorio Society and taught as a member of the string faculty at the Community Music School of Eastman School of Music. She is a former member of the cello section of the Jacksonville Symphony, and she associate principal cellist of the Honolulu Symphony. She has participated in the Anchorage Music Festival, the Spoleto Festival, and the Utah Festival Opera. Ms. Anderson currently performs with the Princeton Symphony and other New Jersey ensembles, and she teaches at Westminster Conservatory of Music and Rutgers Preparatory School.
Pianist Kate Campbell performs frequently as a soloist and chamber musician specializing in contemporary and late 20th century works. She has worked with many leading composers, including Steve Reich, Terry Riley, and David Lang, as well as premiering many works by emerging composers. Kate is the pianist for the New York-based contemporary chamber ensemble REDSHIFT. Recent projects include a bi-coastal tour and residency with REDSHIFT, solo performances with the Bay Area series New Keys, the Bang on a Can Summer Festival, and Switchboard Music Festival, as well as recording for New Amsterdam Records. Before moving to Princeton, she was adjunct professor of music at the University of San Francisco. She was also on the piano faculty at San Francisco Community Music Center and Crowden Center for Music in the Community in Berkeley, CA. She holds degrees from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and University of Wisconsin- Madison.
Flutist Jill Crawford is active as a performer on both modern and baroque flutes. She is a member of the chamber ensembles Trillium, Col Legno and the Volanti Flute Quartet. She has performed with area orchestras in a variety of settings, and she was a participant in the International Baroque Institute at Longy. Miss Crawford can be heard on Music Together recordings playing many types of flutes. She is a graduate of New England Conservatory, and she received a Master of Music from Mason Gross School of the Arts, Rutgers University.
The Washington Post describes pianist Clipper Erickson as "a truly heroic pianist." He has performed in venues from the Great Hall of Moscow Conservatory to the Kennedy Center. His most recent CD, An Orchestra of One, features virtuosic transcriptions for solo piano of orchestral works. An earlier CD release, Woven Images, demonstrates Mr. Erickson's commitment to new music.
Soprano Nancy Froysland Hoerl has performed in Europe, the United States and the United Kingdom. While studying at the Conservatory of Music in Vienna, she premiered numerous works for soprano and chamber orchestra. In Scotland she presented an all-American recital in St. Cecilia Hall at the University of Edinburgh. In 2000 Ms. Hoerl presented a recital in Paris as a part of the Atelier Concert Series and was the featured soloist at the Meramus Mozart Festival in Barbados. As a chamber musician, Ms. Hoerl has appeared as guest artist with the Allegro Society of New Jersey, the Philadelphia Virtuoso Orchestra and the Wilmington Musical Festival. She was a founding member of the Grand Chamber Players of Wilmington.
