Engaged Learning

• While you’re out there learning, we’ll be documenting your journey on an Engaged Learning Transcript (ELT) that will show graduate schools and prospective employers all you’ve accomplished at Rider.
• All students earn points in the same way, by taking an approved course, by participating in approved experiences, or by completing volunteer community service hours.
• Only courses taken at Rider University and experience or service hours performed while a Rider University student are eligible to earn points towards your Engaged Learning requirement.

• Both on and off-campus, you will find countless opportunities to participate in the six categories of engaged learning.
• Experience and service hours submitted must be performed while you are an active, currently enrolled student in your first term or after.
• To earn points for a qualifying co-curricular experience, you must complete and submit an Engaged Learning Experiences form in BroncNation.

• After you complete 20 hours or more in one experience, complete and submit a form in BroncNation.
• During the semester an approver will review your submitted experience. Upon approval and by the end of the semester when possible, the experience will be listed on your Engaged Learning Transcript.
• Want to see your progress? DegreeWorks records progress towards graduation for all your academic requirements, including Engaged Learning. Login to myRider to access DegreeWorks.

• Enter volunteer hours in BroncNation as you work them, or as one total when the service project has been completed.
• Once you have entered at least 20 service hours you will sign up to attend a reflection session, a group discussion with other students who have performed service.
• You are required to attend a reflection session before you will earn points for the service you have performed.

• To introduce you to Engaged Learning at Rider, all freshman and first-year transfer students are encouraged to participate in Rider’s New Student Engagement Experience.
• Only during your first year at Rider, you can earn one (1) point in the civic and community engagement category by attending six (6) campus events in at least three different themes.
• Event themes include sporting events, lectures and workshops, performances, health and wellness events, diversity events, and campus traditions.

• As a freshman or first-year transfer student athlete, you are required to earn 6 Engaged Learning points in at least two different Engaged Learning categories.
• Transfer student athletes who have 31 or more accepted transfer credits need to earn 3 Engaged Learning points in any one category or combination of categories.
• We know that student athletes have a lot of demands on their time. This makes it especially important that you plan during your first year how you will earn the Engaged Learning points you need to graduate. 

• To be awarded points for an experience submitted in BroncNation, you are required to submit a written reflection that demonstrates your understanding of the experience and its impact.
• Students who complete community service will need to sign up to attend a group reflection session.
• You should provide a unique, thoughtful and thorough response to the reflection questions. Sample responses are provided as inspiration to help you get started.

To earn Engaged Learning points, internship, co-ops and fieldwork must meet the following criteria: 

• further utilize the skills you are learning in your major/minor coursework
• provide you with frequent and meaningful feedback from a supervisor or mentor on-site
• be in a field that you are exploring or intend to pursue after graduation
• enhance your further studies, personal life, and career potential
