What is Engaged Learning at Rider?

Engaged Learning refers to activities in which students apply their knowledge in educational settings beyond the classroom. To learn more about the Engaged Learning program at Rider University, visit rider.edu/engaged-learning/program.

How many Engaged Learning experiences must be completed by CCS students?

Degree-seeking CCS students who began their studies in fall 2017 and after must complete at least two (2) high-impact Engaged Learning experiences (worth a total of 6 points), that reflect the university’s strategic themes: leadership, ethics and social responsibility, and global and multicultural perspectives. Students who have attained 31 or more transfer credits only need to complete 3 points from any two of the following areas:

  • Leadership & Mentoring
  • Study Abroad
  • Civic & Community Engagement
  • Internship, Co-Op, and Fieldwork
  • Arts, Media, and Creativity
  • Guided Research & Scholarship

In addition, certain Rider courses carry built-in Engaged Learning credit.

Approved course credits are converted into points. For a 1-credit course, you will earn 1 point; for a 3-credit course, you will earn 3 points. NOTE: For courses offering 4 or more credits, you may earn only a maximum of 3 points.

What documents may be submitted to CCS to complete this requirement?

  • an official college transcript (reflecting at least 31 earned credits)
  • a professional resume
  • a short (5-7 sentence) summary of civic/community engagement work

There are two scenarios for CCS students earning the 6 Engaged Learning Points:

  1. Degree-seeking students with less than 31 transfer credits (6 points needed):
    • submission of professional resume OR
    • submission of summary (5-7 sentences) of civic/community engagement work OR
    • enrollment in Rider courses carrying Engaged Learning credit
  2. Degree-seeking students with more than 31 transfer credits (3 points needed):
    • submission of professional resume OR
    • submission of summary (5-7 sentences) of civic/community engagement work

What if I have additional questions about this requirement and to whom do I submit documents?
