As music teachers around the country return to the classroom — in person, virtually or both — GIA Publications has released a timely supplement to Planning Instruction in Music by Westminster Professor Frank Abrahams and alumnus Ryan John ’13.
Available as a free download from the GIA Publications website, the supplement provides a planning model that will encourage and empower teachers to design transformative, inspiring and engaging lessons in a variety of environments with online components.
“We wanted to put something together that would help teachers through the challenges of teaching online or in hybrid/fusion circumstances due to COVID,” says John. “We knew that people had been essentially ‘crisis teaching’ in the spring when many teachers had to go online for the end of the year. Having received feedback on how helpful Planning Instruction in Music has been for many teachers over the years, we wanted to provide a supplement similar to that text that would offer guidance and support to help teachers move from surviving online teaching to thriving in an online environment.”
The supplement focuses on types of learning environments and elements of the online music lesson plan. It also includes an online music lesson plan template, a sample lesson and a platform for submitting and sharing resources.
