Sen. Booker has represented New Jersey in the U.S. Senate since 2013
by Adam Grybowski
The Rebovich Institute for New Jersey Politics at Rider University will host Sen. Cory Booker for a virtual event on March 30.
"An Evening with U.S. Senator Cory Booker" will feature a conversation as well as a Q&A session beginning at 7 p.m.
Sen. Booker has been representing New Jersey in the United States Senate since October 2013, when he won a special election. He was re-elected to a full six-year term in November 2014. The state’s junior senator, he has emerged as a national leader in the effort to reform the criminal justice system and end mass incarceration. He helped craft the First Step Act, which became law in December 2018.
More recently, Sen. Booker announced that he will seek to make permanent the expansion of the child tax credit contained in the new stimulus bill. He also has come out in favor of reforming the Senate's filibuster.
“Our timing for this conversation could not be better,” says Micah Rasmussen, the director of the Rebovich Institute. “Thought to be ruled out just weeks ago, ending the filibuster now seems increasingly possible. We are also eager to hear about Sen. Booker’s personal experiences and observations during the insurrection at the Capitol.”
Sen. Booker grew up in northern New Jersey and received his undergraduate degree from Stanford University, where he played varsity football. He was awarded a Rhodes Scholarship and went on to study at the University of Oxford, and then Yale Law School, where he graduated in 1997. Starting in 2006, Booker served as Newark’s mayor for more than seven years.
The Rebovich Institute is dedicated to public service and scholarly analysis of government, public policy, campaigns and elections in New Jersey. It was founded in 2001 by the late Professor David Rebovich (1949–2007). Today, the Rebovich Institute is a dynamic and creative home where students can network, study and gain practical experience in New Jersey politics.
Next month, Rebovich Institute will host a virtual discussion with United States District Judge Robert E. Grossman ’73, which takes place April 1.
“An Evening with U.S. Senator Cory Booker" is free and open to the public, but advanced registration is requested by visiting rider.edu/booker.
