Season opener sure to be a slam dunk
After three games on the road, the Rider Broncs will play the 2013-14 home opener on Tuesday, Nov. 26, hosting the Great Danes from the University at Albany at 7p.m. in Alumni Gymnasium; their first home game of the season. The only other time Rider has played Albany was in the 2011-12 BracketBuster, a 70-61 Great Dane victory.
The Broncs are coming off an 89-73 win at Central Connecticut on Saturday. In that game, sophomore Zedric Sadler (Detroit, Mich/Cody) made his first start of the season and the second of his career and compiled career highs in points (21) and assists (5).
At CCSU, the host Blue Devils jumped out to a 12-3 lead before Sadler scored eight points in a 22-6 Rider run to give the Broncs a 25-18 lead, and Rider led 44-28 at the half. Seniors Anthony Myles (Dover, DE/Poly-Tech) and Daniel Stewart (Philadelphia, PA/Neumann-Goretti) combined for 36 points, with Stewart grabbing 10 rebounds.
Albany began the year with victories at Siena (74-62) and against NJIT (71-65) before losing its last three, at Quinnipiac (79-69), at Duquesne (70-59) and to Bucknell on Saturday (77-64). Albany is led by Peter Hooley and Sam Rowley. Hooley is a sophomore guard averaging 16 points per game, while Rowley is a junior forward averaging 13.6 points and 7.8 rebounds per game.
The Great Danes were 9-7 in the America East last year, but beat Maine and Stony Brook in the America East tournament to reach the title game, where they also trumped Vermont for the championship.
After Tuesday night, Rider travels west to the Silicon Valley to play in the Cable Car Classic, hosted by Santa Clara University. Rider plays Rice on Friday, Nov. 29, while host Santa Clara plays North Dakota State. The consolation and championship games will be played on Saturday.
