Recently, 54 members of the Rider Bonner Community Scholars Program served in three locations for Hurricane Sandy Relief on the Jersey Shore.
The Rider volunteers worked with JerseyCares and AmeriCorps to set up the service opportunities at Union Beach, Ortley Beach, and Brigantine Beach on January 26. At Union Beach, the project included the removal of a deck of a primary home that was destroyed by Sandy. At Ortley Beach, the projects included the removal of damaged materials from affected homes. At Brigantine Beach, the project focused around a beach clean up to remove the Atlantic City Boardwalk that remained on the beach from Sandy.
The service projects at the shore were part of the Bonner Winter Retreat. This year’s retreat theme was ReBuilding Communities, focusing on how groups and individuals respond to disasters in order to rebuild them.
The Rider Bonner Community Scholars Program is a community service leadership development scholarship program that exposes members to issues social justice while providing them hands on experience to impact their community.
