Six undergraduates working in unpaid summer internships in government or politics will receive tuition scholarships.
The Rebovich Institute for New Jersey Politics at Rider University recently announced the recipients of its Rebovich Intern Fellowships for 2012, as well as the beneficiary of the Vainieri Huttle Intern Fellowship for Women in Politics.
The Rebovich Intern Fellowships offer tuition scholarships from $500 to $1,000 for select Rider undergraduates who are working in unpaid summer internships in government or politics.
The 2012 Fellows are:
Petra Gaskins ’15 of Deptford, N.J.
Chris Werner ’13 of Hillsborough, N.J.
Michael Kolisz ’13 of Mercerville, N.J.
Anthony Maddaluno ’13 of Staten Island, N.Y.
Matthew Howell ’15 of Flemington, N.J.
Joseph Forte ’13 of Bound Brook, N.J.
In addition, 2012 marked the launch of a new, targeted fellowship: The Vainieri Huttle Intern Fellowship for Women in Politics. Generously underwritten by Assemblywoman Valerie Vainieri Huttle (District 37), a former Rider University student, the fellowship benefits young women who take unpaid political and government internships.
The 2012 Vainieri Huttle Intern Fellow is Rebecca Grossman ’14 of Metuchen, N.J., who will receive a $1,000 scholarship.
Since its founding more than 10 years ago, the Rebovich Institute for New Jersey Politics has sought to train the next generation of political leaders. Toward that end, the Rebovich Institute works with Rider students to develop their résumés and secure internships during the summer, as well as during the school year.
Most internships in politics and government are unpaid, presenting challenges for students to participate, despite the huge networking and career benefits they often yield.
“All of these outstanding students are part of a growing program at Rider designed to train the next generation of political leaders,” said Ben Dworkin, director of the Rebovich Institute. “Internships are a key building block in anyone’s career in politics and government, but the economic realities often prevent students from taking advantage of these opportunities because so many of them are unpaid. Through our Intern Fellowship program, The Rebovich Institute makes it a little bit easier for our best students to afford these kinds of career opportunities.”
The Rebovich Institute for New Jersey Politics at Rider University is dedicated to public service and scholarly analysis of government, public policy, campaigns and elections in New Jersey.
