The Rebovich Institute for New Jersey Politics at Rider University will welcome former New Jersey Gov. Brendan T. Byrne for a witty and insightful Q&A session as part of its Governing New Jersey series on Thursday, April 14. The event, A Conversation with Former New Jersey Governor Brendan T. Byrne, will begin with a 6 p.m. reception, followed by a Q&A session in the Mercer Room, inside Daly Dining Hall. This event is free and open to the public.
One of the most astute – and funny – people in political life, Byrne will be interviewed by Ben Dworkin, director of the Rebovich Institute for New Jersey Politics. They will discuss the highlights of the Byrne administration, as well as the state of politics over the past 20 years.
A Democrat who was sworn into office as the 47th governor of New Jersey on January 15, 1974, Byrne replaced the outgoing William T. Cahill and served two terms in Trenton.
Byrne’s time in office is notable for the establishment of the state income tax, the Pinelands Protection Act, the expansion of major highways, including Route 287 and the Atlantic City Expressway, the introduction of casino gaming to Atlantic City, and the further development of the Meadowlands Sports Complex. Upon its completion in 1981, the current Izod Center was known as Brendan T. Byrne Arena before being renamed Continental Airlines Arena in 1996.
