Just days after the National Hockey League’s Winter Classic, the Rider club hockey team and its alumni took to the temporary ice at Philadelphia’s Citizens Bank Park for an intrasquad game of Cranberry vs. White on Friday, January 6.
A nation of hockey fans turned its eyes to the same ice on Monday, January 2, for the annual Winter Classic, which this year pitted the hometown Flyers against their archrival, the New York Rangers. For the rest of the week, the ice – a temporary set-up at the summer home of the Philadelphia Phillies – played host to a number of minor league games and other local programs, such as Rider. Just before the Rider and alumni laced up their skates, the stadium contained 40,000 fans for an overtime American Hockey League thriller between the Adirondack Phantoms and Hershey Bears.
Rider’s club team is a member of the Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Hockey Association, playing and winning against such schools as The College of New Jersey, Rowan, St. Joseph’s, and Seton Hall. Rider achieved its best season record ever in 2010-2011, finishing with a 22-7 record.
The team takes home ice again during Winter Weekend, for a 9:45 p.m. game against Seton Hall at Loucks Ice Center at the Lawrenceville School on Friday, January 27, and a 9 p.m. game versus Monmouth on Saturday, January 28. For the complete schedule, visit http://www.ridericehockey.org/
