In addition to the various study abroad opportunities offered by Rider’s Center for International Education, various colleges and departments from across the University offered a number of short-term international study tours throughout Europe, Asia and the Caribbean during the winter and spring breaks.
Most recently, the College of Business Administration’s Center for International Business ran two separate study tours to Cuba and Ireland during spring break.
Dr. Susan Denbo, professor of Legal Studies and Business Ethics, Dr. Lauren Eder, professor of Information Systems and Supply Chain Management, and Dr. Cynthia Newman ’89, associate professor of Marketing, led a study tour to Cuba as part of CBA-317: Emerging Nations Study Tour: Cuba. During the interdisciplinary, experiential trip, from March 10 to 18, the students examined Cuba’s history, business environment, health care system, tourism industry and legal system, as well as the future of United States-Cuban relations.
Students also toured Cuban attractions such as Old Havana and the Cathedral and attended the cannon-firing ceremony at one of the forts. Site visits included an organic cooperative, a cigar factory and a rum museum, as well as a workshop by a ceramicist and a convent that delivers social services to senior citizens and young children. The group also attended two lectures, Cuba Today and Women in Cuban Society, delivered by professors from the University of Havana.
Meanwhile, Dr. Marge O’Reilly-Allen, associate professor and chair of the Accounting department, and Dr. Ira Sprotzer, associate professor of Legal Studies and chair of the Marketing, Advertising and Legal Studies department, led a study tour to Ireland as part of CBA 315: International Business of Sports, from March 9 through March 18. In Dublin, site visits included Trinity College, Kilmainham Gaol, the Guinness Storehouse and Croke Park, headquarters of the Gaelic Athletic Association. The group also visited Naas Racecourse in Kildare, TurfnSurf Lodge & Surf School in Bundoran, County Sligo Golf Club, Islandview Riding Stables in County Sligo, Pure Skill Company in Galway and the Aran Islands.
From March 9 through 17, Dr. Shunzhu Wang, associate professor of Chinese, and Dr. James Castagnera, associate provost and associate counsel for Academic Affairs, led tours to Beijing, Xian, and Shanghai as part of IND-210 Global Encounters in China. The trip, from March 9 to 17, was also open to alumni and community members.
In Beijing, the group took a tour of the Summer Palace, the Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square and the Great Wall. Later, they experienced the culture and history of Xi’an when they biked around the Ancient City Wall, visited a foot massage parlor and took a tour of the Terracotta Warriors and the Horses. In Shanghai, the group climbed the World Finance Center, the tallest skyscraper in China.
During the winter break, Dr. John Donovan, associate professor and chair of the Management department, and Dr. Kathy Dunne, associate professor of Accounting, led a trip to Italy from January 10 to 19, featuring guided tours of Milan, Venice, Florence and Pisa. Students in CBA-315 Global Business Study Tour had a chance to explore the Duomo, Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpieces and Venice’s Grand Canal Palaces. Site visits also included major businesses in Italy.
