Harry I. Naar, professor of Fine Arts and director of the Rider University Art Gallery, is featured in a group exhibition at the George Segal Gallery at Montclair State University entitled Focus on Princeton, showing the latest works of the Princeton Artists Alliance. The exhibit runs from March 12 to April 16 at the gallery, located at One Normal Avenue, Montclair, N.J.
“Intricate, impenetrable and dense like Jackson Pollack’s action painting, Naar nevertheless actually defines his subject,” wrote M. Teresa Lapid Rodriguez, director of Art Galleries and curator of the exhibition, in the Focus on Princeton catalogue. “Every tree, every branch, every stem is recorded, individualized, balanced and saved from anonymity.”
Recently, Naar was one of 20 New Jersey-based artists selected to create two original, limited-edition prints for the new Capital Health Systems’ Hopewell Township, N.J., campus. The artists were selected by the Brodsky Center for Innovative Editions of Rutgers University.
In 2009, Naar was one of 30 artists chosen to participate in the Invitational Exhibition of Visual Arts by the American Academy of Arts and Letters, which also awarded him the prestigious Hassam, Speicher, Betts and Symons Award. He is listed in Who’s Who in American Art.
Naar’s paintings and drawings have been shown in selected public collections, including the New Jersey State Museum in Trenton, the Jane Voorhees Zimmerli Art Museum at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, the American Council on Education in Washington, D.C, the Newark Art Museum, the Lyme Academy of Fine Art in Lyme, Conn., the Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center of Vassar College, the Jersey City Art Museum, Johnson & Johnson corporate offices in New Brunswick, Bristol-Myers Squibb headquarters in New York, and the American Council on Education in Washington, D.C., among others.
