Service activities on Friday, February 15, will commemorate King’s legacy.
This year marks the 27th Anniversary of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. federal holiday (MLKDay.gov). It was in 1994 that this day was declared a national day of service, and since then, all United States citizens have been encouraged to dedicate their time to local nonprofit organizations to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his work.
To commemorate his legacy, Jersey Cares, a non-profit committed to recruiting and engaging volunteers, will offer a variety of service projects throughout the state on Monday, January 21. Organizers are hoping to mobilize 2,000 volunteers in more than 50 service projects across 15 New Jersey counties. One of the projects is located in the Trenton Area. Volunteers are needed to engage with youth by interacting in a variety of arts and crafts activities at the Boys and Girls Club of Trenton and Mercer County. To sign up for this project or others, please visit: http://www.jerseycares.org/JC_MLK_DOS.
Because classes will not be in session during the actual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, Rider University students will be offered service opportunities during the Black History Month celebration in February. This year, Rider will celebrate the Day of Service on Friday, February 15. Organizers are looking for volunteers to participate in after-school programs at the Boys and Girls Club. About 80 students participated in the service project last year and organizers are expecting the same number this year. For more information, please contact Jane Sanchez at [email protected].
