Former baseball standout Nick Margevicius '17 slated to make MLB debut

Former Rider University baseball standout Nick Margevicius '17 will make his Major League Baseball debut for the San Diego Padres on Saturday against the San Francisco Giants as announced by the team on Thursday. A 6-foot-5 left-handed pitcher, Margevicius was a non-roster invitee and made four starts during Spring Training for the Padres, amassing a 1-0 record and 4.50 ERA in 12 innings pitched. He struck out 12 batters and issued just four walks.

Margevicius was selected in the seventh round with the 198th overall pick of the 2017 Major League Baseball Draft. He was the 64th Bronc to be selected in the MLB Draft and he will be the seventh former Rider University baseball player to appear in Major League Baseball. To date, just one other 2017 MLB Draft selection has made his big league debut (Kyle Wright, Atlanta Braves).

In two years during the regular season in the minors, Margevicius went 14-9 with a 3.00 ERA in 183 innings pitched. In stints in rookie ball and three levels of Class A, he racked up a 1.16 WHIP and struck out over 200 batters, while issuing just 25 walks. Last June, Margevicius was named a 2018 Class A Midwest League All-Star.

Last fall, he was called up make a start in the playoffs for the Padres Double A affiliate, the San Antonio Missions. Margevicius tossed a gem, picking up the victory as he allowed just one earned run over seven innings. He struck out eight hitters in the game and scattered four hits.
