The Rider University community will take the time to celebrate the themes of peace, love, joy and unity that seem to prevail throughout the many holidays of this festive season.
Students, faculty and staff will gather during the 18th annual Celebration of Lights on Thursday, December 10. The event, hosted by Rider’s Center for Multicultural Affairs, will feature stations highlighting the traditions of Diwali, Kwanzaa, Christmas, Three Kings Day and Hanukkah. It all begins at 5 p.m. in the Cavalla Room in the Bart Luedeke Center on Rider’s Lawrenceville campus, 2083 Lawrenceville Road.
As part of the event’s tradition, Dr. William Guthrie, professor of Education, will light Rider’s unity candle and present Native American folklore. During the ceremony, Jamiyl Mosley, area director of Residence Life, will share one of his poems. Stephanie Ahenkora, a sophomore Political Science major, will lead the procession from station to station, where students will share stories and perform skits about their holiday traditions. During the stations, Rider Vibes, an a cappella singing group, and Rider’s Gospel Choir, will perform. All in attendance will also be invited to sing the event’s unity song, Let There Be Peace on Earth.
Students from various organizations will also participate, including Asian Students at Rider University, Black Student Union, Catholic Campus Ministry, Protestant Campus Ministry, Latin American Student Organization, Hillel and Rider’s Organization of Caribbean Affiliated Students.
