Scholarship includes $2,000 in support and the opportunity to shadow an industry professional
Junior digital media film, television and radio major Jillian Belmonte has been honored by The Alliance for Women in Media as the 2014 Future Media Leader Scholarship winner of their New York chapter.
Dr. Pamela Brown, communication and journalism department chairperson, and Dr. Cynthia Lucia, film and media studies program director, nominated Belmonte in recognition of her many talents.
“I am very aware of Jillian’s accomplishments,” says Brown. “Her inquisitive mind and bright personality make her a natural for a career in the media industry.”
AWM-NYC’s Future Media Leader Scholarship was established in 2004 to honor the achievements and contributions of Audrey Tanzer, an executive of the alliance. The award is dedicated to women communications, broadcasting, digital media and advertising majors.
As the scholarship winner, Belmonte will be awarded $2,000 toward her education, a mentoring session from a leader in her chosen industry and the opportunity to participate in AWM-NYC’s Shadowing Program.
Belmonte is elated about what this opportunity has to offer. “Media as a whole is a male-dominated industry. It is a fantastic idea for women to help other women,” she says. “Having the support system of AWM-NYC and its affiliates is extremely beneficial for a young women like myself to have the opportunity for her voice to be heard.”
She received her award at a ceremony on Oct. 21.
