Molly Podosek recognized for work with University's recreational programs
by Andrew Zayicek '18
Senior Molly Podosek received the 2017 William N. Wasson Student Leadership & Academic Award, which recognizes the top students in collegiate recreation who participate in or are employed by their institution's recreational sports department.
“I was excited to receive this award because of how much I love working with the club sports programs at Rider," Podosek says. "My positions and experiences have really helped me to grow both as a person and a professional.” Podosek, who's double majoring in entrepreneurial studies and human resources, has been an influential student on campus. Along with four other student leaders, she founded the Rider University Club Sports Council, a newly recognized Student Government Association sub-government. She was selected to serve as the first president during its beginning phases and first year of operation. Podosek successfully directed the council to make informed decisions, budget effectively and support student participants. Podosek also served as president of the Unified Sports Club, which supports Rider's partnership with Special Olympics New Jersey.
“Molly effectively led the Club Sports Council in its infancy and consistently lead the Unified Sports Club with enthusiasm," says Assistant Director of Campus Life for Recreation Programs Dianna Clauss. "She contributed countless hours on conference calls with Special Olympics New Jersey and delivered training to Rider students — many of whom were having their first experiences working with community members with intellectual disabilities.” Recreation Programs at Rider includes intramural and club sports, such as ice hockey, equestrian and ultimate frisbee, as well as outdoor recreation, fitness programs and special events. “Molly’s leadership in difficult situations has been a breath of fresh air when needed most," Clauss says. "She will be missed upon graduation this year, but I know she will add value to any organization she joins.”
The namesake of the William N. Wasson Student Leadership & Academic Award was the founder of the National Intramural Association, now known as the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association, or NIRSA. Based in Corvallis, Ore, NIRSA supports leaders in collegiate recreation. Since its founding in 1950, NIRSA membership has grown to comprise nearly 4,500 dedicated professionals, students, and businesses, serving an estimated 8.1 million students.
