She worked at Rider for 24 years before retiring in 1999
Joan Szabo, who retired in 1999 as secretary to President Bart Luedeke after working at Rider for 24 years, passed away on May 20. She was 80.
During her years at Rider, Szabo volunteered for Feed the Hungry, Catholic Campus Ministry, Mill Hill Child and Family, and the credit union. After retirement, she volunteered with Helping Hands for the Elderly, as a Eucharistic minister for the Church of St. Ann in Lawrenceville serving the homebound, and for 11 years as a Robin for Hamilton Township School District.
Szabo was born in New Brunswick, N.J., and raised in Highland Park, N.J., where she graduated from high school in 1954.
She is survived by her loving husband of 60 years, John R. Szabo; her children, Barbara Peluso and husband Joseph, Debbie Hul and husband Wolfgang, and John Szabo and partner Dana Ingandela; her grandchildren, Sarah Brun and husband Joseph Brun, Scott Young and wife Lauren Young, Joanna Young, Carly Severino and husband AJ Severino, and John Szabo III; her step-grandchildren, Marc Peluso and wife Sarah and Gregory Peluso; her great-grandchildren, Ceci, Zoey and Eleanor Brun; and her brother, John McGowen, and Natalie McGowen; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Visitation for family and friends was held on Wednesday, May 24, from 9 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. at The Church of Saint Ann, 1253 Lawrenceville Road, Lawrence, NJ 08648. A Mass of Christian Burial followed.
