The event is free for veteran and military members, and their families
Rider University will present its 3rd Annual Veteran Career Fair and Military Expo on Thursday, March 19 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Student Recreation Center, 2083 Lawrenceville Road. The event is free for veteran and military members, and their families. Beginning at 11 a.m. the fair will also be open to the general public and students.
Over 100 local employers and support organizations will be in attendance at the fair to provide information on job opportunities and career and networking advice. In addition there will be optional break-out sessions during the fair related to subjects such as career paths, transitioning from the military to civilian life, resume writing and interview skills.
Participants are asked to bring multiple copies of their resume to the fair.
“The Veteran Career Fair and Military Expo is a wonderful opportunity for employers to meet candidates that are well-suited for their companies,” Russel Melville, director of Veterans and Military Affairs at Rider University, said. “Veterans and members of the military possess valuable leadership and decision making skills that could make them an asset to potential employers.”
Rider University alumnus and veteran William Stahl ‘07, a supervisor with WithumSmith+Brown, a prominent New Jersey public accounting firm, always looks forward to attending the annual career fair. “I’m excited every year to return to Rider and talk with the veterans to help get them hired. Veterans generally bring some skills to the table that our typical candidate does not," he said.
When Peter Reid was getting ready to graduate from Rider in 2013, he attended the veteran career fair looking to find a job that combined his military service in the Marine Corps with the knowledge of finance he acquired at Rider. “As a student veteran, the career fair gave me an opportunity to create professional connections in a veteran-friendly setting and receive a job offer before I graduated from Rider.” Now Reid returns to the career fair as college unit director for Northwestern Mutual, recruiting finance professionals for his growing financial services firm.
Supporting veterans is an important part of Rider’s history. When the university first opened its doors in 1865, most of the members of its inaugural class were Civil War veterans.
Today Rider is a Yellow Ribbon University, committed to serving active duty service members, veterans and their beneficiaries in reaching their goal of starting or continuing their education.
Rider’s Veteran Career Fair & Military Expo is free for employers and job seekers. Pre-registration is requested online at www.rider.edu/veterancareerfair, calling 609-896-5033 or emailing [email protected].
The fair is being presented in conjunction with the American Legion, Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve, Hero2Hired, and New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development.
