Rider University’s student-run radio station, 107.7 The Bronc, earned a record three Intercollegiate Broadcasting System (IBS) Media Awards during a ceremony held in New York City on Feb. 21. The awards included Best Station Promotional Poster, Best On-Air Pledge Drive and Best Giveaway.
“The eight nominations and now three wins validate the experiential learning opportunities our students are receiving,” says John Mozes, general manager of 107.7 The Bronc and executive director of the new Student Media Center. “We're tasked with preparing them with the real-world skills they need for the workplace, so their success is our success."
In just its second year, The Morning Bagel Run and Jewelry Spree, which earned Best Giveaway, expanded from offering free bagels to adding coffee and now includes a $300 gift card from Peroni’s Hidden Treasures, drawing even greater participation from the campus community.
The station also earned national recognition for its first-ever Radiothon, which raised $56,000 over the course of 74 hours of continuous live student and alumni programming.
Junior film and television major Owen Nelson, who created the award-winning Radiothon reel, said the recognition reflected the teamwork behind the effort.
“Receiving recognition for our work is so rewarding because so much effort went into each and every one of our nominations,” says Nelson. “We couldn't have done it without our wonderful alumni and staff."
Jake Goebel, a sophomore graphic design major and lead graphic designer for 107.7 The Bronc, designed the poster for the station’s annual Scream Screen event, which earned Best Station Promotional Poster.
“Winning the award was the extra gratification that let me know my hard work and dedication to the radio station paid off,” he says. “I hope to continue to help make 107.7 The Bronc the best and earn more nominations going forward."
For Rosalyn Tiangco, a senior arts and entertainment industries management major and student general manager of 107.7 The Bronc, the IBS Media Awards represent more than a competition.
“In the three years that I have attended the IBS Media Awards and conference, I have learned so much about being a better leader and radio personality,” she says. “Each award and nomination pushes us to keep working harder and wanting to do even better.”
Established in 1940, IBS represents more than 1,000 education-affiliated radio stations and webcasters nationwide, recognizing excellence in student broadcasting.
