From classical masterworks to contemporary gems, Westminster’s distinguished faculty take the spotlight in an inspiring recital series showcasing their musical excellence.
Celebrating the centenary of Modesta Bor, one of Venezuela’s most distinctive composers, this program places her music at its center, revealing a composer who embraced the music of the people as a vital source for classical expression. Rooted in Venezuela’s nationalist movement, Bor drew on folk rhythms and popular traditions, weaving merengue, joropo, and other Venezuelan dances into a musical language uniquely her own.
Her Tres Canciones, Tríptico sobre poesía cubana, Suite criolla, and Secundo ciclo de romanzas are joined by music that illuminates the broader musical context of her time, including works by Antonio Estévez and María Luisa Escobar. The program concludes with Venezuelan and Dominican merengues, offering a lively glimpse into the popular traditions that figure so prominently in her music.
