On November 9, 1938, the Nazis unleashed pogroms on Germany’s Jewish community. Rioters destroyed innumerable Jewish homes, hospitals, schools, and synagogues. The attack came to be known as Kristallnacht, “Night of Broken Glass,” for the shards of shattered glass that littered the streets in the aftermath.
