Catalan composer Xavier Montsalvatge’s El Gato con Botas (Puss in Boots) is a rarely performed operatic gem, brimming with charm, wit, and musical sparkle. Premiered in Barcelona in 1948, this one-act opera tells the delightful tale of a clever, fast-talking cat who, in exchange for a hat, a sword, and a pair of boots, secures a kingdom and a royal bride for his humble master. Along the way, the cat uses his wiles to outsmart a bumbling ogre and elevate his master’s status—earning laughs and admiration from audiences of all ages.
Montsalvatge’s score is energetic and whimsical, filled with lively rhythms, lush melodies, and playful feline-inspired musical effects–a perfect introduction to opera for family audiences!
Performed in Spanish.
