Online Writing Lab E-Mail Tutoring

Please read carefully through the following terms and conditions for e-mail tutoring offered through the Academic Success Center’s Online Writing Lab.

Violating these policies may result in suspension of e-mail tutoring privileges.

  1. Papers must be submitted as a Word document.  If using Pages, please set the document to convert to Word prior to sending it.
  2. Students are limited to 1 e-mail session per day, and 2 e-mail sessions per week (Sunday through Saturday.)
  3. Students are limited to 10 e-mail sessions per semester.
  4. A submission of a paper to e-mail tutoring does not guarantee an appointment will be available within the time frame the student desires. There is a 24-48 hour return time in processing e-mail tutoring requests. E-mail tutoring requests received during non-business hours will be processed the next business day (example: a paper submitted at 10 p.m. on Friday will be processed on the following Monday morning and the 24-48 hour return time will begin then.) Students will receive an e-mail confirming receipt of the request and the expected return time of the paper (if scheduled-see #4.)
  5. E-mail tutoring will respond to a pre-set number of sessions each day; once we have received more than our volume limit, we will no longer accept additional sessions on that day. Students who submit papers after the limit has been reached will receive an e-mail to that effect.
  6. Students will also receive an automated e-mail from TutorTrac regarding the scheduled appointment. The student does not have to attend the appointment-this is simply a function of the scheduling program.
  7. Students must use a Rider University e-mail address to receive feedback.
  8. Please keep in mind that tutors will take no more than one hour to read and respond to your paper. In face to face sessions, tutors are typically able to get through 5-7 pages in an hour. If your paper is longer, you may want to consider a face to face session.
  9. We cannot edit or proofread your paper for you. We can suggest directions, yet the real work has to be completed by you.
  10. Students may submit their own work only. You cannot submit a paper on behalf of someone else.
  11. Remember, send it as a Word document or for Pages, see #1.

Because of time constraints, tutors cannot focus on every aspect of your paper. Which aspect of your paper would you prefer the tutor to focus on?
Content (thesis, argument, introduction/conclusion, organization, development, flow, clarity, transitions)
Grammar and other surface level concerns (grammar, punctuation, mechanics)
Let the tutor decide
Other (please specify)
Within that focus area, is there something specific you would like to work on?
(For instance, if you chose Content, you might be particularly concerned about your thesis statement; if you chose Grammar, you might be especially worried about commas.)

If you are submitting a paper for review, please keep in mind that the Writing Studio does not proofread to identify and/or correct every error in your paper. Rather, we try to identify patterns of errors or weaknesses and explain how to improve those weaknesses.
