The Rider and Quinnipiac field hockey teams recently joined forces to Play Pink and raise money towards stamping out breast cancer.

October is the official Breast Cancer Awareness Month of the National Susan G. Komen Foundation. The 10th month of the year also happens to be the height of the collegiate field hockey season. These two seemingly separate entities collided on Saturday, October 16, when the Rider and Quinnipiac field hockey teams joined forces to Play Pink and raise money towards stamping out breast cancer at Ben Cohen Field. More than 300 fans were on hand to see both teams wear pink shoelaces and raise donations in support of the Susan G. Komen Foundation with the Play 4 The Cure effort in the fight against breast cancer.
“This is an important cause for all women, and obviously those affected by breast cancer,” said Rider head coach Lori Hussong. “This disease has hit really close to home, with team mentor Cathy Carter-Romero (Rider’s director of Publications) being diagnosed for the second time and Susan Gallagher, the mother of assistant coach Kelly Crist, also recently diagnosed. We are trying to do our small part in helping researchers find a cure as soon as possible.”
Rider won its ninth game in a row on the strength of a hat trick from junior Marlaine Schneider, coming from behind to post a Northeast Conference victory against Quinnipiac.
“Today’s victory was for Cathy and Sue, and how much they do for us,” Schneider said of the Play 4 The Cure effort. “We played as hard as we could today because of them and the fight that they are both going through.”
