Cory Booker, the popular mayor of Newark, N.J., to speak on “the state of politics today.”

The Rebovich Institute for New Jersey Politics will present An Evening with the Hon. Cory Booker on Tuesday, March 12, in the Yvonne Theater, on Rider’s Lawrenceville campus. There will be a reception at 6:30 p.m. followed by a 7:30 p.m. presentation and Q&A. Rider is located at 2083 Lawrenceville Road (Route 206 South). The event, part of the Rebovich Institute’s Governing New Jersey series, is free and open to the public.
Cory Booker, the popular mayor of Newark, N.J., already being touted as a Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate, earned attention by capturing the office of the mayor as a political outsider in the state’s largest city. In his first term in city hall, Booker reduced Newark’s crime rate, implemented pay cuts for top-earning city managers and directors, and reduced his own salary by 8 percent. Now in his second term, Booker and his team have more than doubled the rate of affordable housing production, created the city’s largest expansion of parks, and brought more than $1 billion of new economic development into the city of Newark. Booker’s legislative exploits has seen him recognized by numerous magazines, including his listing in the 2011 TIME 100, the magazine’s annual list of the 100 most influential people in the world.
Booker received his B.A. and M.A. from Stanford University, where he also competed as a member of the football team, a B.A. in Modern History at Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar, and completed his law degree at Yale University.
