Service activities on Monday, January 16, and Friday, February 17, will commemorate King’s legacy.
This year marks the 26th Anniversary of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. federal holiday (MLKDay.gov). It was in 1994 that this day was declared a national day of service, and since then, all United States citizens have been encouraged to dedicate their time to local nonprofit organizations to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his work.
To commemorate his legacy, Jersey Cares, a non-profit committed to recruiting and engaging volunteers, offers a variety of service projects throughout the state on Monday, January 16, 2012. One of the projects is located in the Trenton area. The mural painting project at Trenton Central High School currently has spaces available. They are looking to recruit 150 volunteers to assist with the project. To sign up for this project or others, please visit: http://www.jerseycares.org/JC_MLK_DOS
Because classes will not be in session during the actual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, Rider University students will be offered service opportunities during the Black History Month celebration in February. This year, Rider will celebrate the Day of Service on February 17. Last year, we sent more than 80 students to four afterschool programs through the Boys and Girls Club of Trenton. We are looking forward to making an even bigger impact this year. Formal details will be announced soon. However, you may contact Elizabeth Newman, Urban Education Coordinator, at [email protected], for more information.
