Conductor and scholar Dennis Shrock is Westminster's artist-in-residence October 12 - 16.
Westminster Choir College artist-in-residence Dennis Shrock will present a series of lectures and masterclasses from Wednesday, October 13 to Friday, October 15 on the Westminster campus in Princeton. The public and the University community are invited to attend a no charge. All events take place in the Playhouse in the heart of the Westminster campus.
On Wednesday, October 13, at 9:10 a.m., he will present a lecture titled “Brahms and the Requiem,” followed by a lecture focusing on Romantic era performance practice. At 11:30 a.m. he will lead the Westminster Symphonic Choir in a rehearsal of Brahms’ Ein deutsches Requiem.
On Thursday, October 14 from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. he will lead a graduate conducting masterclass .
The events of Friday, October 15 consist of a lecture on creative programming from 9:10 to 10:10 a.m. and a rehearsal of Brahms’ Ein deutsches Requiem with the Westminster Symphonic Choir from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The day will conclude with an undergraduate conducting masterclass from 3:20 to 4:20 p.m.
On Saturday, October 16, Westminster’s Office of Continuing Education will present a Saturday Seminar titled “Performance Practice with Dennis Shrock” from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. This fast-paced event will focus on performance practice, vocal and instrumental sound, meter and tempo and recitative. Tuition is $110 plus a one-time $25 registration fee. The seminar is free to Westminster Choir College students who register before October 13. Recipient of a Westminster Alumni Merit Award, Dennis Shrock has combined the roles of conductor and scholar for the majority of his career, having held major conducting positions in the academic, professional, and community worlds. He is currently editor of The Choral Scholar, the journal of the National Collegiate Choral Organization. For the 2010–2011 academic year he is serving as interim professor of Music at Texas Christian University.
