Looking for an exotic location to travel to while you expand your knowledge? Want to study the tropical environments and ecology of Central America and the warm waters and beautiful coral reefs of the Caribbean? Wish to learn about Mayan culture and history? Interested in finding out about the economy of Belize, especially the role of ecotourism and sustainable development? Curious about African influences on Latin American music? Well, have we got the course and trip for you.
Dr. Cynthia Newman, Associate Professor of Marketing, and Dr. Jonathan Husch are taking a nine-day trip to Belize in January 2016 (tentative trip dates are Jan. 9 to Jan. 17) as part of the three-credit, dual-listed course CBA/IND-316 Nature's Business. The trip will focus on the culture, environment, ecology, geology, economy, ecotourism, and sustainable development of Belize, both in its interior and along its Caribbean coast.
Depending on the focus of a student’s research paper/independent project for the course, Nature's Business may satisfy a requirement in a major/minor program or a core requirements; please speak to an academic advisor about what specific academic requirement this course may satisfy. Regardless, Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS) credit is given for those enrolled in IND-316 and College of Business Administration (CBA) credit is given for those enrolled in CBA-316.
The estimated total cost for the trip is approximately $3,500, including airfare, hotels, almost all meals, transfers, travel insurance, activity costs, tips, etc. About the only things not covered are personal purchases, one lunch, passport costs and ground transportation to and from Newark Airport.
Approximately four or five pre-trip classes for the course (either IND-316 or CBA-316) will be held during the fall semester of 2015, typically on a Friday evening or possibly Saturday afternoon, depending on the collective availability of course participants. At least one post-trip class meeting will be held during the spring semester of 2016. You will register for either course for the spring 2016 semester and the three credits can be included in your spring semester credit total (no extra fee if total is 18 credits or less). A $300 deposit will be required to reserve a space on the trip and must be sent to Dr. Newman immediately after you have been accepted for the trip (trip application deadline has been extended to Friday, September 18, 2015) The CBA Study Tour Application for Undergraduates is available on the CBA 2016 Study Tour Web page.
