Financial journalist and author Stacey Tisdale brings real world experience to her lecture
by Aimee LaBrie
The Millennials (those born between the years of 1982 and 2004) have gotten a bad rap. They are accused of being attention-addled, privileged and unmotivated. Actually, though, this generation is the most educated in American history, and the troubles they inherit are not their own making, but those brought on by the Baby Boomers and Gen X.
On Monday, Oct. 19, at 6:30 p.m. in Sweigart Auditorium, financial expert, journalist and author Stacey Tisdale will help participants understand the millennial generation (she has written that "their financial attitudes are much more like those of people who grew up during the Great Depression") and how to better connect with this group.
Having reported on business and financial issues for more than 20 years, Tisdale is currently the senior editor of personal finance at Black Enterprise and a regular Huffington Post blogger. From 2002 to 2004, Tisdale filed business and consumer reports for all of the CNN networks, including, CNN, CNNI and Headline News. Tisdale also reported for Inside Africa, a weekly news magazine show on CNN International. During this period, she contributed reports to Money Talks, the nationally syndicated program created by BusinessWeek. Tisdale has appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show as a financial expert and in O magazine. She also writes columns for Essence Magazine.
Her book, The True Cost of Happiness: The Real Story Behind Managing Your Money, was published in 2007 and her financial literacy curriculum for high school students, Winning Play$, has received numerous awards and accolades including the U.S. Department of Education’s Excellence in Economic Education award for 2010 and in 2011, and The National Association of Black Journalists Community Service Award, also in 2011.
This talk is offered in tandem with a new American Studies course called "Millennials: the New Adulthood" and is co-sponsored by the American Studies program.
