Join Dr. Sangmi Kang as she helps identify music teaching practices representing denial, defense, and minimization in various cultures.
As society has greatly diversified, it is essential to nurture students toward intercultural sensitivity for them to honor and accept cultural differences from an ethnorelative perspective. In this seminar, based on Bennett’s (2017) six stages of worldviews for intercultural sensitivity, which move from being ethnocentric to ethnorelative (denial, defense, minimization, acceptance, adaptation, and integration), we will identify music teaching practices representing denial, defense, and minimization in various cultures, and explore ways to instill acceptance, adaptation, and integration. Practical teaching examples and student learning outcomes will also be shared with the participants. Student teaching outcomes are good indicators of the development of intercultural sensitivity among your students.
