This unique and inspirational online seminar/class is designed in this unique year to detail issues that are confronting teachers and artists at all levels as we exit this life-altering pandemic. Acknowledging that our students will be different, and that WE are different sets up new challenges for us moving forward. This class will offer ways forward for all of us.
Led by three of America’s leading artists, authors and innovators, James Jordan, Makoto Fujimura and Jason Max Ferdinand have all published books this year that aim to help teachers and conductors navigate the human and musical “waters” ahead.
Join Us for this Exploration and Needed Journey of, thought, discussion and unpacking so that you can enter the coming school and performance year clear-eyed and inspired led by these inspirational teachers and artists.

- Grammy-nominated Conductor of the renowned Westminster Williamson Voices and The Same Stream Choir, James Jordan just published his 60th book with GIA- "The Musician’s Empathy: Becoming Another"- to be released for the start of this course. He is also Co-Director of The Choral Institute at Oxford and is Professor of Conducting at Westminster Choir College. Topics from that book form the essential lectures of this course. He is also a student of the renowned social activist conductor Elaine Brown and has co-authored a book, "Lighting a Candle" which details her humanitarian approach to choirs and music-making which will also be shared in this course. He is also the author of "The Musician’s Being", another book that will form the core of this course.
- Makoto Fujimura is a leading contemporary artist whose process driven, refractive “slow art” has been described by David Brooks of the New York Times as “a small rebellion against the quickening of time”. Fujimura is also an arts advocate, writer, and speaker who is recognized worldwide as a cultural influencer. A Presidential appointee to the National Council on the Arts from 2003-2009, Fujimura served as an international advocate for the arts, speaking with decision makers and advising governmental policies on the arts. - Jason Max Ferdinand is a gifted conductor and teacher. "Teaching with Heart" has received accolades for providing teacher/conductors with the “tools” to navigate the social issues of our times. Ferdinand is Professor, Chair of the Music Department, and Director of Choral Activities at Oakwood University, where he conducts the Aeolians of Oakwood University. He maintains an active schedule as a presenter, adjudicator, and guest conductor for high schools, collegiate, and church choirs throughout North America, Asia, Europe, and the Caribbean. He is conductor of the Internationally renowned Aeolians of Oakwood University, a choir which took the 2019 ACDA Convention spotlight, referred to as the choir “that broke the ACDA”. Dr. Ferdinand is a co-author of the new book, The Musician’s Empathy: Becoming Another with James Jordan.
