Dr. Michael Pillsbury is a leading expert on China
Dr. Michael Pillsbury, an influential behind-the-scenes advisor to President Trump on foreign policy and trade policy with China, will appear at Rider University on Oct. 30.
Pillsbury will deliver remarks on "Winning the U.S.-China Trade War" as part of this year's Hennessy Family Lecture on Capitalism. The series has previously brought former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich and writer Dinesh D'Souza to Rider.
“The current state of trade with China has already had short-term effects on the economy and U.S. workers," says Micah Rasmussen, director of the Rebovich Institute for New Jersey Politics, which is presenting the event. "Few are as well-positioned as Michael Pillsbury to help us understand what is happening now and what the long-term implications will be."
China and the United States, the homes of the world's two largest economies, have been engaged in an ongoing trade war since 2018. President Trump has long railed against what he sees as unfair trade practices with U.S. trading partners. His installation of tariffs against China started a series of escalating economic retaliation that has, at times, rattled global markets while straining the economies of both nations.
Trump describes Pillsbury, a frequent media commentator, as the “leading authority on China.” He is currently the director for the Center on Chinese Strategy at the Hudson Institute, as well as the author of The Hundred-Year Marathon: China’s Secret Strategy to Replace America as the Global Superpower. Pillsbury has served in the administrations of Presidents Carter, Reagan and George H.W. Bush.
The Rebovich Institute is dedicated to public service and scholarly analysis of government, public policy, campaigns and elections in New Jersey. It was founded in 2001 by the late Professor David Rebovich (1949–2007). Today, the Rebovich Institute is a dynamic and creative home where students can network, study and gain practical experience in New Jersey politics.
This program is generously supported by the Hennessy Fund.
“Through their generous sponsorship, Mike and Patti Hennessy, both of the Class of 1982, and their family have a long history of helping to bring influential political voices to Rider,” Rasmussen says. “We're grateful they have again chosen to support an event around a timely and important topic."
"Winning the U.S.-China Trade War with Dr. Michael Pillsbury" is free and open to the public, but advanced registration is requested by visiting www.rider.edu/pillsbury.
