Conductor Joe Miller, composer Julie Wolfe and director Doug Varone share the story of the upcoming production of Wolfe’s Pulitzer Prize-winning masterwork Anthracite Fields, that will be performed at the Roebling Wire Works in Trenton on April 21 and 22. Presented as part of Westminster’s Transforming Space project, the Westminster Choir will performing the piece with Bang on a Can All-Stars, Musical America’s Ensemble of the Year.
Using musical examples and video, the panel will discuss the inspiration for the music, the decision to perform it at the factory, the logistics involved in staging and what audiences will experience at the upcoming performances.
Anthracite Fields is a docu-oratorio about the mining industry and the Pennsylvania mining community that thrived in the early 20th century. Coal from those mines played a vital role in Trenton’s industrial success, which inspired the slogan “Trenton Makes, the World Takes.”
