FAQs for Rider University Musical Theatre
The basic requirements consist of 3 semesters of ballet, 2 semesters of jazz, 2 semesters of tap, 2 semesters of musical theatre styles.
Many students choose to enroll in more than the required amount of classes or choose to take classes at Broadway Dance Center or Steps on Broadway in New York City!
Students at Rider receive one hour of individual voice lessons for 6 semesters. In their senior year, students participate in a half-hour lesson so that they can focus primarily on building a repertoire book.
Students also gather each week with their classmates for a studio class. This serves as a one-hour workshop-style course conducted by the students’ voice teacher. In this class, students may conduct mock auditions, practice new material, or participate in a masterclass.
Rider also offers a professional accompanist program. For an extra fee per semester, students are assigned an accompanist who will play during the second half-hour of their individual lesson. Students are also given an additional 45-minute session with the accompanist to practice any material or develop audition cuts. This program is unique to Rider and is used by the majority of musical theatre majors.
Students at Rider take four levels of basic acting, these include the study of styles such as Chekhov, Stanislavski, and Uta Hagen. Students will analyze and perform monologues and scenes as they improve their craft.
Following these four levels, students enroll in courses such as Musical Theatre Scene Study and Song as Text that focus on their development as a musical theatre actor.
