Freshman Year

  • Meet with your school counselor
  • Choose courses that are challenging and meet graduation requirements
  • College prep courses such as Advanced or Honors classes
  • Remember, colleges will be looking at your entire high school transcript

Sophomore Year

  • Check in with your school counselor to assess your performance
  • Plan challenging courses for your junior and senior years
  • What academic major or career interests you?
  • Research colleges on the web
  • Make a list of colleges you would like to visit
  • Learn about Rider!

Junior Year


  • Check in with your school counselor to assess your performance
  • Plan what kind of college experience you would like to have to consider all elements: academics, location, value, personal attention, athletics
  • Take practice SAT/ACT tests
  • Attend college fairs and speak with admission representatives


  • Check in with your school counselor to make sure you’re on track to completing our entrance requirements before you plan your senior schedule.
  • Choose courses that are challenging: at least one English, one Math, and one Science course for senior year
  • Plan to take the SAT/ACT at least once
  • To send your SAT/ACT scores directly to Rider (codes: SAT I: 2758, ACT: 2590). See Rider's Test-optional admission policy.
  • Visits the schools you are interested in (Open Houses, Information Sessions, Tours)


  • Make a list of colleges to which you might apply

Senior Year


  • Review your list of colleges with your school counselor
  • Make note of application deadlines and requirements to each college
  • What are you your personal goals and desires in choosing a college?
  • Register to take the SAT/ACT at least once before November
  • Visit any of the remaining colleges on your lit by early November (Open Houses, Information Sessions, and/or tours)
  • Request official High School transcripts to be sent to colleges to which you are applying
  • Make arrangements to get letters of recommendation from your school counselor, teacher, coach, boss, etc.
  • SAT/ACT scores to be sent to Rider (Codes: SAT I: 2758, ACT: 2590).  See Rider's Test-optional admission policy.
  • Apply well in advance of colleges’ stated deadlines and make sure your application is complete
  • Begin completing your FAFSA after October 1


  • Check in on your application status at colleges to which you applied
  • Send mid-year grades if you have not received an admission decision yet
  • Review your admission packets carefully for important deadline information
  • Submit your FAFSA form by February 15
  • Attend Financial Aid Workshops


  • Review your admission packet for important deadline information
  • Notify colleges you have not selected to inform them you are enrolling elsewhere
  • Attend Admitted Student Days or other Admitted Student events
  • Submit your deposit to your desired college by May 1
  • Submit AP scores and transcripts of any college courses you have taken to the college you will be attending


  • Request that your school counselor send your final transcript to your selected college
  • Register and attend Placement Testing and orientation programming at your selected college
