This camp is an exciting way for young students to be introduced to a fine selection of instruments. We offer a total immersion experience in violin, cello, keyboard, ukulele, or tromba. Violin students interested in sampling the viola during camp will have the opportunity. (Note: Tromba is a beginning brass instrument. It is similar to a bugle, which is a trumpet-like brass instrument, but without valves.) Students will have the opportunity to learn several pieces on their instrument, and find the gratification of being able to play real songs in just two weeks. In addition to their chosen primary instrument, students will enjoy a variety of classes including Dalcroze movement, stylized dance, chorus, arts and crafts, and music appreciation. Students will be introduced to written musical notation through musical games and activities. Students enrolled in the full-day camp will receive ONE 30-minute private lesson during the lunch time period. On the last day of camp, families and friends are invited to attend a final presentation. Parents will hear how much the students have learned in just two weeks. We look forward to meeting our new young musicians!

Try It Out Morning: 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM
Try It Out Afternoon: 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM
Try It Out Full Day: 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM

Requirements
Students should not have any previous experience playing the instrument that they choose to try out. Students must be entering grades 1 through 3 in the fall of 2019.

Schedule
There will be a break in both the morning and afternoon sessions. During this time the students will have a chance to go outside and stretch their limbs, socialize, and have a snack. A lunch hour is built into the schedule for the full-day students. Parents are asked to provide a snack and water or juice to be enjoyed during these breaks, and a hearty lunch for the full-day students. We will also include outside activities such as T-shirt painting.

Instrument Rental Information
Students choosing violin or cello will be expected to rent an instrument for the camp. Students choosing ukulele should purchase a ukulele before camp begins. Students playing the tromba can rent the tromba from the Conservatory.  Information on instrument rentals and purchase is available here. For students choosing keyboard, the Conservatory will provide keyboards for students to play in class only.  Students should make arrangements to have a piano or electric keyboard at home on which to practice.

Location
Try It Out will be held at the John Witherspoon Middle School in Princeton, right next door to Westminster Choir College.
