Jazz Combo Boot Camp
Summer 2019

Dear Parents and Students,

Welcome to Jazz Combo Boot Camp!  Our faculty members are all looking forward to meeting and working with you. We have a great week of music planned. You will be learning about instrumental roles within a small jazz group and how to “run” the ensemble, all while playing alongside our professional faculty in a fun and challenging way. In addition to group lessons based on instrument, students will enjoy specialty classes such as combo class, jazz theory and improvisation, and a short listening class that will tie directly into what they are learning at camp.

The First Day of Camp
Students should come prepared with one jazz piece of their choosing.  Faculty will hear the campers play at the beginning of the first day of camp in lieu of an audition. We might also include sight reading of jazz charts and some improvisation.  This process helps us to group students into combos and choose appropriate tunes.

Following is some important information you will need to know for the camp.

Jazz Combo Boot Camp starts on Monday, July 29, 2019 and runs through Friday, August 2.  We will meet in the student lounge of the Conservatory building (Princeton Hall) on the Westminster Choir College campus.  The camp hours are 8:45 AM -12:30 PM.  In order to start promptly at 9:00 AM, check in and set-up starts at  8:45 AM.

A sign-in sheet will be in place every day at the entrance of the main office. You will be asked to sign in and also sign out at the end of camp each day.

Required Medical Information Form
If you have not already done so, please complete the Medical Information Form and upload it to your RegOnline account or email it to the Conservatory at [email protected] before the first day of camp.  We will keep these forms on file for the duration of the camp as the information may be important in case of an emergency.

Please remember to pack a snack each day. We will have a break in the middle of the morning for the students to socialize, relax and have their snack. A small bite to eat can go a long way in terms of having enough energy to get through the morning!

On the first day of camp, students will receive a Westminster Conservatory t-shirt and a music folder. Please have your camper wear the Conservatory t-shirt on the last day of camp for our final performance.

Final Performance
At noon on Friday we will have a final performance featuring the students in a variety of small combos performing tunes that they have worked on over the course of the week.  Further details about the final performance will be communicated as we get closer to the camp.

What to Bring

  • Please bring your instrument!
  • Manuscript paper (either in a book or photocopied in a binder)
  • A copy of The Real Easy Book Vol. 1 (Please be sure that transposing instruments have the book in the correct key - see the camp description under “Materials” for more information if needed).
  • Instrumentalists should bring all necessary accessories (cords, cables, reeds, etc.).
  • Amplification will be provided for electric instruments.
  • A recording device – optional but extremely helpful since there will be a lot of material covered in a short period of time, and it helps to review the lessons by listening!
  • Bring a snack and a water bottle each day

We are looking forward to seeing you on July 29!
