Program overview

Westminster’s BM-MME program provides advanced students with an opportunity to engage with challenging ideas, work alongside world-class faculty and graduate with two degrees in only five years. This program is open by invitation to students who demonstrate an aptitude for academically rigorous work.

Students participating in the 5-year program may begin to take graduate-level courses as early as their junior year.

Become a music educator

Westminster has demonstrated success in placing graduates in positions in public and private schools worldwide. 90% of Westminster’s 2019 music education graduates are currently teaching in schools around the country.

Program requirements

This dual degree program provides students the training necessary to become a certified music educator, and challenges students with rigorous and thought-provoking graduate studies.

Graduates earn New Jersey certification to teach vocal instrumental and general music at all levels. Undergraduate coursework includes elementary and secondary general music education, choral music education, instrumental studies, music technology and creativity. Graduate coursework in topics such as curricular design, critical pedagogy, and research, prepares students to bring about positive change in their classroom and school communities. 

Grow as a music educator

Beginning freshman year, music education students work with supervising teachers in area schools to gain field experience. Westminster’s active National Association for Music Education (NAfME) student chapter offers multiple volunteer and leadership opportunities, which include participation in regional and national professional conferences. students also have opportunities to volunteer as conductors with the Westminster Neighborhood Youth Choir.
